SpongeBob - A History of the Game

By Rahul D. Gupta

Before the game came the show: SpongeBob was created by cartoonist/marine biologist Stephen Hillenburg who loved both his careers. Hillenberg started working on SpongeBob in 1993 when the hit animated series Rocko's Modern life was cancelled. SpongeBob was an instant hit, and was loved by kids and adults alike due to its cross cultural references and clever word play. The cartoon was in fact so popular that in 2002, fans were devastated when there were rumors that show would be cancelled, and collected and sent thousands of petitions to Nickelodeon appealing them not to cancel the show.

When a show, especially an animated one becomes such a big hit it's usually turned into game and that is exactly what happened in SponeBob's case. SpongeBob games have been released in a variety of game gaming platforms. Though there are numerous titles that have been released including some that have been designed by fans (can be downloaded free of cost), there are few SpongeBob games that really very good.

Well for all fans of SpongeBob, SpongeBob SquarePants: SuperSponge gives you an opportunity go beyond watching SpongBob and become one yourself. In this game SpongeBob is sent on various missions by his two favourite superheroes Barnacle Boy and MermaidMan. Smooth graphics and easy controls makes this game a must play.

Another all time favourite of mine is The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie Game. Developed by THQ,The game can played on a variety of platforms like PS2, Game Boy Advance, Xbox and Nintendo Game Cube. The basic plot of the game is very similar to that of the film. Plankton has stolen king Neptune's crown and SpongeBob teams up with Patrick to bring it back. There are eighteen levels in the game which keeps the player happily engaged for several weeks. However, the PC version of the game has a lightly different game play and fewer levels.

Developed by Blitz Games and Arlton SpongeBob's Atlantis SquarePantis, is based on television series. This SpongeBoy game can be played on platforms like Game Boy Advance, PS2 and Nintendo DS. It can also be downloaded and played on your mobile. The game plot goes somewhat like this. The missing half of the Atlantean Amulet is discovered by SpongeBob and Patrick. When shown to Squidward, he believes it to be a part of the original amulet, which is still in display in the Bikini Bottom museum. Of course, the Amulet has magical powers and when joined opens a magial pathway to the ancient city of Atlantis. What happens there? Play the game and find out for yourself.

The Other three games that any fan of SpongeBob must get his hands on are SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom, SongeBob SquarePants: Creature from the Krusty Krab and SongeBob SquarePants: Lights, Camera, Pants.
